REPORT: Newark Woman Killed By 2 Vehicles That Crashed Into Laundromat Near Maplewood

Helicopters circling overhead sent many local residents to social media seeking to discover what had happened.

A Newark woman was killed on Monday, April 27 after two vehicles crashed into the front of the Ivy Hill Laundromat at 515 Irvington Avenue in Newark, near the Maplewood border. Maplewood police alerted residents via text that there was police activity in the area.

Per the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office, an investigation is underway into the crash, which happened around 2:30 p.m.

“Preliminary findings indicate that a pickup truck struck a parked vehicle outside the Ivy Hill Laundromat on Irvington Avenue at approximately 2:30 p.m. causing both cars to crash through the front of the business,” read a press release from Carmen Martin of the ECPO. “The victim was seated at a table near the front of the laundromat when she was struck. She was pronounced deceased at the scene.”

Residents of Newark, Irvington, South Orange and Maplewood were alerted to the incident by helicopter traffic overhead. Some took to the SOMA Lounge Facebook group for more information, where one local resident posted the photo below.

At 3:51 p.m., the South Orange-Maplewood School District emailed families to announce “that Underhill Field and Clinton Elementary School are currently in a shelter-in-place due to police activity in the surrounding area. All students, including those on Underhill Field and those attending the YMCA aftercare program, are safe.” The district announced that the shelter-in-place was lifted at 4:09 p.m. “There is no immediate threat at this time. Thank you for your cooperation and understanding,” read the second email.
