From MEND (Meeting Essential Needs with Dignity):
MAPLEWOOD, NJ — September 1, 2026 — MEND (Meeting Essential Needs with Dignity) will host its 8th Annual Green Bean Gala on Friday, October 16, 2026, from 6:30 to 10:30 p.m. at Maplewood Country Club. MEND’s signature fundraising event will unite supporters, pantry leaders, volunteers, and community partners to strengthen access to fresh, healthy food across Essex County.
This year’s Gala comes at a critical time. Recent federal SNAP changes are tightening eligibility and expanding work requirements, making it harder for many adults and families to qualify for or remain enrolled in food assistance. As more neighbors turn to local pantries and mobile markets to fill the gap, funds raised through the Green Bean Gala will help MEND respond with high-quality, culturally relevant food and community-driven programming.
“The Green Bean Gala is a joyful reminder of what is possible when our community comes together,” said Robin Peacock, Executive Director of MEND. “As more families face barriers to accessing the food they need, every guest, sponsor, and donor helps us keep fresh food within reach – and ensures our pantry and community partners can continue meeting rising needs with dignity.”

Named for MEND’s original mobile pantry, The Green Bean bus, the Gala encourages guests to wear their greenest cocktail attire for an evening of connection and celebration. The event will feature a cocktail hour and silent auction, dinner, a special appeal, and dancing. Green is warmly encouraged, but not required.
New this year, MEND will host its first-ever Emerald Exchange, a free community green-attire pop-up ahead of the Gala. Community members can browse donated green attire, try on their favorite pieces, and choose an item to take home at no cost. No donation or Gala ticket is required. The event will be held September 25 and 26 at MEND’s Fresh Food Hub in Orange. MEND is also accepting donations of green attire in advance.
