An Irvington man was arrested by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents shortly before 9 a.m. on October 27 on Springfield Avenue in Maplewood near the Hilton Library.
The man and his partner had just dropped their child off to school in Irvington and were traveling west on Springfield Avenue in their Ford Fusion when they were pulled over by ICE.
Village Green was on scene as the agents departed with the man in several unmarked SUVs with tinted windows.
Maplewood Police responded to the scene after a 911 call was placed. Local resident Meghan Gosselink was on scene and made a call to DIRE, Deportation & Immigration Response Equipo, which provides support to “undocumented individuals and their families facing immigration and detention crises.”

Maplewood PD explained that they do not cooperate nor interfere with federal law enforcement. Police asked bystanders if they could help the woman, who does not have a drivers license, move the car that her partner had been driving and that had been left running in the street.
The man arrested, Carlos Gonzalez, is a native of Colombia. His partner said she has asylum and showed Village Green her work permit. Through Google translate, she said that her partner had no criminal record and that they had been to immigration court where his case was “closed” (“pero el caso lo cerraron”).
Through DIRE and SOMA Community Cares, the woman has been connected with a local immigration attorney.
Village Green has reached out to a Dept. of Homeland Security spokesperson for information and will update this story when they respond.
