It’s the return of “Stay & Play Weekend” in South Orange this weekend. Here’s a look at what’s ahead, plus information on street closures for Sunday’s PlayDay.
Achieve Newstead 5K – Saturday, September 19th
The 13th annual Newstead 5K race will kick off at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 19, from the South Mountain School Annex (112 Glenview Road). D & I Fitness is sponsoring this year’s race to benefit The Achieve Foundation. In addition to the 5K race, the event also includes a two-mile walk and a fun run for kids.
Join friends and family in support of Achieve’s mission to raise funds for exemplary public education for students and teachers in the School District of South Orange & Maplewood.
Registration is $30 from Sept. 16 through race day. Runners will receive signature T-shirts while supplies last. Pre-register and find more information at AchieveFoundation.org.
South Orange Community Picnic – Saturday, September 19th
Come on down to Cameron Field from 1pm to 4pm for a fun-filled day of yard games and socializing with friends and neighbors. The day will feature your elected officials and town employees going head to head in the game of Flag Football at 2pm! Ricalton’s will be providing Hot dogs, Hamburgers, Drinks and Snacks for purchase. Bring your blankets, bring your family, bring your friends and yourself! No RSVP is required.
Newcomers Day – Sunday, September 20th
If you’re a newcomer to town (or know someone who is) then we hope we’ll start off your Sunday with Newcomers Day. Join Village officials for “Coffee and Conversation” at the South Orange Public Library from noon to 1:00 p.m. Meet your neighbors, the Village President, the Board of Trustees and the folks who manage our town, while also learning about civic and community groups that maintain the soul of the Village. This event is sponsored by the Community Relations Committee.
PlayDay South Orange – Sunday, September 20th
The greatest day of play is back! It’s the most fun you’ve ever had between two curbs. From 1 to 6 pm, PlayDay South Orange returns even bigger and better. Thousands will enjoy street games, fitness activities, inflatables, live music, art, dance, and food from local eateries. (Rain date Sunday, Sept. 27.) All events will take place on South Orange Avenue, Sloan Street, Village Plaza and designated spaces in between. Some activities such as inflatables, mini golf and radio-controlled cars will require a wristband purchased on site for $10.
PlayDay is produced by the South Orange Village Center Alliance in conjunction with the Village of South Orange. It is being presented by Rite Aid with additional support from Investors Bank, Overlook Medical Center, Matters Magazine, Natalie Farrell of Weichert Realtors, BCB Bank South Orange, the South Orange Country Day School, EEA Indusries and Sparkhouse.
