Summer is always a time when the South Orange – Maplewood School District tackles various capital projects in the schools that are trickier to do during the regular school year.
This year, there are multiple projects scheduled for the summer — although nothing as big as last year’s Maplewood Middle School expansion, according to district business administrator Cheryl Schneider.
Here is a partial list:
- Security upgrades in multiple schools
- Exterior brick and steel work at Columbia High School (CHS)
- Asbestos abatement at CHS in preparation for future replacement of the boiler system in A-wing
- Partial roof replacements at CHS B and D wing; Jefferson roof; administration building roof, and South Mountain Annex roof
- CHS emergency generator (to support district-wide servers and telephone systems)
- CHS kitchen refrigerator/freezer replacement (paid for through food service program)
- Completion of projects at Maplewood Middle School including the addition and the new technology lab
In addition, said Schneider, the district is doing numerous smaller repair projects throughout the district, moving multiple classrooms throughout the district, and beginning work on the Montrose School conversion. (The latter will be something The Village Green will follow and report on as it evolves.)
All work should be completed by the time students fill the hallways in September.
