Who needs the runway when the school hallway showcases fashion at its trendiest? South Orange and Maplewood students may return to school in summer’s shorts and t’s, but it won’t be long before their thoughts to turn what’s hot for cool weather.
Maddy G., a rising Kindergartener, says that it’s all about sweaters “with sparkles.” The trend for embellished sweaters includes sweaters with beads and sequins. Fellow five-year-old Trystan agrees with Maddy, explaining that she plans to wear “sparkly corduroys” for the first cool day of school.

Milk Money owner Jaime Haber agrees with the girls. She further explains, “North Face apparel always goes fast.” Still popular after all these years, Haber sees Uggs flying out the door. “Every style is a hit,” she says. The must surprising trend to Haber is for dresses. “I can’t keep them in the store,” she says. “Dresses are very popular lately.”
The same holds true for teens, though their dresses are often worn tunic-style, with leggings, explains Julia B., a rising sophomore. If that sounds like a flashback, think Flashdance: off-the-shoulder sweaters are all the rage, according to Abby B., a rising senior at CHS.
“Jeans, jeans, jeans,” said Auriela, a customer browsing at West Village, the Ridgewood Road consignment store for juniors and adults. “I also think you’ll see a lot of people wearing corduroy pants that look like jeans, not dressy.”

School dress code controversies often heat up with the temperature, and the district had its share of challenges in the spring. CHS students note that, even when it’s cold outside, there can be challenges. “You see kids wearing shirts with pictures and sometimes words that can be, shall we say, interpreted,” explains Aurelia. “But that’s mostly silly stuff.”
“Just get up each morning and represent yourself, is what I say,” said Aurelia. “Go to school and shine.”
