Although summer is drawing to a close, we’re still hankering for some cool, delicious sweet treats to indulge in before fall hits.
Luckily, SOMA has some terrific options. Right now, Cedar Ridge is offering a rotating selection of completely house-made ice cream sandwiches.
On a recent weekday, patrons could choose from Triple Peanut Cookie with Banana Ice Cream; Triple Peanut Cookie with Peanut Butter Ice Cream; Chocolate Cinnamon Cookie with Mexican Chocolate Ice Cream; and Oatmeal Raisin Cookies with Cinnamon Swirl Ice Cream.
“Not only are they all made in house, but we even used fresh chiles we grew in the Maplewood Community Garden for the Mexican Chocolate ice cream,” said owner Joe Ramaikas.
Ramaikas said he is looking into creating some new flavors, including elderberry ice cream paired with a to-be-determined cookie (perhaps something citrusy, like lemon or orange.)
Over on Springfield Avenue, Gigi’s Cupcakes is selling their delicious “Gigi Pops,” inspired creations of cake sandwiched between layers of frosting and festooned with toppings. The pops are packaged in a plastic push pop with a cover — perfect for those on the go.
Try the Chocolate Peanut Butter (rich chocolate cake between layers of peanut butter frosting and topped with chocolate nibs), or the Black Velvet (rich buttermilk cake between layers of cream cheese frosting.)
And there’s always the delicious, specially decorated sugar cookies available at The Able Baker, in adorable summer shapes including sunglasses and flip flops.
Washed down with an ice cold coffee or a refreshing Moroccan Mint iced tea, there’s no better way to enjoy a perfect summer day.
