Dan Barry was the recipient of this year’s Maplewood Literary Award, presented by the Maplewood Library as part of the 2016 Ideas Festival. A Maplewood resident, Barry shared tales of his writing adventures to an audience of 150 people, discussing people he has met, how he finds and develops his stories, and the relationships he has formed over the years.
Barry is a Pulitzer Prize-winning columnist and reporter for The New York Times and the author of four books, including the forthcoming The Boys in the Bunkhouse: Servitude and Salvation in the Heartland, set to be released in May 2016.
Maplewood Library Director Sarah Lester introduced Mayor Vic DeLuca, who proclaimed it “Dan Barry Day” in town. Lester interviewed Barry and presented him with the award.
The author took questions from the crowd and signed copies of his books. Members of the Library foundation, the Friends and the Trustees, as well as several New York Times journalists, were in the audience.
Barry’s talent and wit made for a delightful afternoon.
