Dancing at the Woodland featuring members of the NYC based Lydia Johnson Dance Company will offer a free performance to the public on Sunday, July 17 at 7:00 PM. The Woodland is located at 60 Woodland Rd. Maplewood, NJ.

Performing on the open floor of the Woodland’s Great Hall, dancers will present a “studio showing” of work by acclaimed choreographer, company founder and Maplewood resident Lydia Johnson. The New York Times calls Ms. Johnson “a tantalizingly distinctive modern-dance choreographer” with “uncommon skill at matching ballet movement to music, both at the large scale of structure and in small, felicitous details”.

“We are thrilled to have this opportunity to give back to the community” said Ms. Johnson, who offers year-round classes and a summer dance came at Maplewood’s Burgdorff Center for the Performing Arts. A Q & A with the dancers and Ms. Johnson will follow the performance.

Making use of the unrestricted open space available at the Woodland, dancers will perform in a rare intimate setting surrounded by the audience. Seats and standing room will be available for 250 guests only on a first come basis. Doors open at 6:00 PM. This performance is not appropriate for small children, no one under the age of 5 will be admitted.

The program will feature work choreographed by Lydia Johnson including:

Night of the Flying Horses
Music: Osvaldo Golijov

Giving Way
Music: Mark Mellitts, Osvaldo Golijov

New Work (in Progress)
Music : Handel Trio Sonatas
