Morrow Memorial Church in Maplewood is kicking off its 2014 season of JYF, a youth group for students in grades 6-8. Students come together for weekly, Friday meetings to participate in fun activities as well as community service projects.
Led by Shona Roebuck, JYFers enjoy catch up time with games and snacks. Then they separate into small groups to work on their service projects. Throughout the year, there are off-site activities too, including a visit to a corn maze, laser tag and a swim party.
“JYF gives middle school students a time and place to serve and share and have a lot of fun doing it,” said Roebuck. “Ultimately, it is a time and place for kids to discover their gifts and where and how they fit into the God’s world. This year we’ll be helping with rebuilding homes affected by Hurricane Sandy, raising money for Ebola relief in Sierra Leone, supporting children without homes, working to end hunger right here in our communities, among other projects.”
To register, fill out the medical form and photo release form attached as PDFs, plus bring your calendar and your medical insurance card. Parents are expected to volunteer roughly three times a year to supervise JYF events.
JYF is open to children of all faiths. The kickoff event, featuring family games and dessert, is Friday, Sept. 12 from 7-9 p.m. at Morrow Church, 600 Ridgewood Road, Maplewood.
