The Maplewood Post Office is staying right where it is for a little bit longer.

The Maplewood Township Committee unanimously voted Tuesday night to extend the post office’s lease with the township at its current location, at 160 Maplewood Ave., through February 2015. The federal agency’s lease was set to expire on Nov. 15.

The extension was granted due to delays in construction at the federal agency’s new home, at 195 Maplewood Ave., said Roger Desiderio, the township attorney.

“The alternative would be they would probably have to move someplace else” if the town did not extend the lease, said Desidero.

Meanwhile, construction on the new building has been pushed back to the spring, as the township continues to negotiate with the developer, L&M Development Partners. According to a recent interview with Mayor Vic DeLuca, the town and L&M are going “back and forth” on a sales price but “expect to move forward.”

The township will continue to collect $15,400 a month in rent from the post office under its current lease.
