Residents know what a treasure the Maplewood Memorial Library is — now viewers of Sesame Street will know, too.

“Two Maplewood residents filmed a short video for Sesame Street, with the Maplewood Library Children’s Room as the setting,” said Jane Folger, head of children’s services. Justin Simonich and Tom Placke are the creators, directors, filmmakers, and animators of a short animated film called “The Library Song” that was recently released on the Sesame Studios YouTube channel.

Folger explained that the filmmakers wanted to create a new video series for Sesame Studios called “What’s New Today?” and as local parents who use their local library, they wanted the first video to be about going to the library. The duo even had the Maplewood Library in mind when they were envisioning the video.

“After obtaining permission to film from the Township, they planned each scene, wrote an original song, had it performed professionally, and created some characters to animate in the video,” said Folger. “They filmed it in the Children’s Room early one morning in August, before any patrons had arrived. Maplewood families will enjoy this kids-eye view of their local library.”

Library staff was thrilled about the filming. “[The filmmakers] were so much fun to work with, and it was very exciting at every step of the way,” said Folger.
