Artist Spotlight: Felix Sockwell

Former Maplewood and now South Orange resident Felix Sockwell is a serious commercial artist with an impressive portfolio. He began his career as a promotional and advertising art director for DDB and Latitude/The Richards Group before starting the brand integration group for Ogilvy & Mather. Since 1999, Sockwell has been in business for himself.

You can find his work everywhere — from the pages of Newsweek and The New York Times, to hotels.com, to U.S. postage stamps, to the Apple iPhone (check out his process in designing iTunes icons here), and on lawns throughout Maplewood in the form of WhoWeUse’s blue map pin-shaped signs.

Often drawing complex images in a single continuous line, Sockwell’s art is clever and chock full of cultural references. Check around the interwebs and you’ll see that he’s pretty talented with words as well — from interesting blogs where he rips apart and redesigns logos (see the FIFA World Cup 2014 logo redesign here) and interviews where he sends up himself and the branding design/advertising industry overall.
