Maplewood’s Springfield Avenue Partnership (SAP) is hosting a full schedule of events in February in honor of Black History Month.
Residents and visitors are invited to participate in these fun and educational activities for children, families and adults. Events include multi-cultural dance and fitness classes at Viva Z Club, storytelling at the Maplewood Memorial Library Hilton Branch, a “Saturday Series” of events at The Rack, discounts at The Park Wood Diner and more.
“The partnership is proud to sponsor these events on Springfield Avenue,” said SAP District Manager Julie Doran. “We are pleased so many businesses and organizations are offering exhibits, discussions and other celebrations in honor of Black History Month.”
Here are some highlights:
The Rack (1844 Springfield Avenue) has a series of events talking place every Saturday in February, including:
- Tea Time – Children’s Literature/Story Telling Saturday 2/7 11am-3pm
- On The Mic Music – Saturday 2/14 7pm-10pm
- On The Mic Poetry – Saturday 2/21 7pm-10pm
- Literature Brunch – Saturday 2/28 (Time: TBA)
The Hilton Neighborhood Association and the Hilton Branch Library will hold a joint meeting on Thursday, February 19 in DeHart Community Center (120 Burnett Avenue) at 7:30 p.m., featuring the documentary, “Shared History.” This true story documents the meeting of the slaves and slave owners descendants from the Woodlands Plantation in South Carolina and uncovers mythologies about the 260-year-old relationship.
Rhonda Kearse, an HNA member who appears in the documentary, will lead a discussion at the conclusion of the evening. This meeting is free and open to everyone. The Park Wood Diner (1958 Springfield Ave) is offering 10% of your bill from Monday through Thursday, just for mentioning Black History Month.
SAP is sponsoring and Astah’s Art Gallery (1897 Springfield Avenue) is hosting a night of music, art and delicious food, celebrated with friends and neighbors on Saturday, February 21 at 7 p.m. The event features singer Cynthia Tucker and is open to all, free of charge.
The SAP provided a grant of $100 as a supporting sponsor to any district business or community institution in the special improvement district that scheduled an event as part of the Black History Month celebration.
