UPDATED: Police Investigating Double Homicide on Walton Rd. in Maplewood

Update 11:30 a.m. August 4, 2019: Joseph D. Porter, 27, of Elizabeth, NJ, has been arrested and charged in the murders of David Kimowitz, 40, and Karen L. Bermudez-Rodriguez, 26. Read more here. 

Authorities are investigating a double homicide on Walton Road in Maplewood on Saturday morning, which resulted in the deaths of a man and a woman.

There is currently an active police presence in the area, and authorities said the investigation is active and ongoing. As of 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, no arrests had been made.

“We are confirming the investigation of a double homicide in the 400 block of Walton Road,” Essex County Prosecutor’s Office’s Chief Asst. Prosecutor Thomas Fennelly told Village Green in a phone interview shortly before 1 p.m. “There was one female victim and one male victim.”

In a press release sent by the ECPO at 4:33 p.m., Fennelly reported that Maplewood police officers responded to a report of a woman being assaulted shortly after 6 a.m. at the area of Walton Road and Jefferson Avenue.

The release read: “Arriving officers located an injured woman lying in the street. This victim was transported to Beth Israel Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead at 7:17 am. As Maplewood officers were canvassing the area of this incident, an unresponsive male was located within a residence in the 400 block of Walton Road. This male was pronounced dead at the scene.”

Fennelly said authorities were withholding identification of the victims pending notification of next of kin.

“There are no arrests,” Fennelly said. “We are still interviewing witnesses.”

“No cause [of death] has been determined yet,” he said. The release issued later noted that the cause of death would be determined via autopsy by the Regional Medical Examiner’s Office in Newark, NJ.

Fennelly said residents should expect to see “a heavy police presence in the area”, and that the neighborhood is “very well protected.”

Acting Essex County Prosecutor Theodore N. Stephens, II and Maplewood Police Chief Jim DeVaul have announced that authorities are investigating an incident in which two people were killed early Saturday morning in Maplewood, NJ. Shortly after 6:00 am, Maplewood police officers responded to the area of Walton Road and Jefferson Avenue on a report of a woman being assaulted.

Arriving officers located an injured woman lying in the street. This victim was transported to Beth Israel Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead at 7:17 am. As Maplewood officers were canvassing the area of this incident, an unresponsive male was located within a residence in the 400 block of Walton Road. This male was pronounced dead at the scene.

The identity of the victims is being withheld pending notification of next of kin, according to Chief Assistant Prosecutor Thomas S. Fennelly, of the Prosecutor’s Homicide Unit, who added that
the cause of death for both victims will be determined by autopsies conducted at the Regional Medical Examiner’s Office in Newark, NJ.

This incident is being investigated by the Prosecutor’s Homicide Task Force, and the Maplewood Police Department. The investigation is active and ongoing.
