Local knitters, crocheters and all-around yarn enthusiasts are sad to hear that Knitknack on Springfield Avenue in Maplewood will be closing its doors after June 30.

Owner Marie Downes announced the closing in an email to customers on Sunday, June 7. “Dear Knitknack Family,” Downes wrote, “I have really sad news.”

Downes went on to explain that business was “not quite going the way” she would like it to and that she had been dealing with some health issues.

“I gave it a year and I had a great time,” Downes added. “Thank you everyone for your support throughout the last year. You are awesome!” Throughout the year, Downes took to social media to announce in-store events and sales, and introduced popular new events such as April’s NJ Wool Walk.

Downes purchased the business a year ago from its founder Meera Kothari who spent seven years building the business before moving to California with her family.

Knitknack’s last day will be Tuesday, June 30. In the meantime, everything in the store is on sale. Downes is also selling all shelving and other furniture.
