Nearly 50 million Americans are currently living in poverty. For these families and individuals, a warm coat is a budget extra they simply cannot afford.

Miss New Jersey PreTeen, Nyla Edwards, is inviting area residents to make a difference in neighbor’s lives by donating coats and dollars during her upcoming coat drive.

Edwards lives in Maplewood with her parents Trent and Anya Edwards and is an 8th grader at Our Lady of Sorrows School in South Orange. She earned the title of Miss Preteen New Jersey at the 2016 National American Miss state pageant held August 14 in New Brunswick. Now she is working with One Warm Coat to collect clean, gently used warm coats, and dollars to support the coat drive program.

The process is simple: drop off your extra coat(s) on November 12 between 12:30 and 4:30 at Maplecrest Ford-Lincoln, 2800 Springfield Avenue, in Vauxhall. Maplecrest Ford-Lincoln has made the generous offer of a FREE OIL CHANGE to the first 50 customers who donate a coat to Nyla‘s coat drive on November 12.

All donated coats will be given to a local agency for distribution to local children and adults in need. If you do not have a coat to donate, you can help provide a warmer winter by texting “WARM” to 80100 to donate $10 to One Warm Coat or by visiting www.onewarmcoat.org/donate.

“My goal is to collect 200 coats and as many dollars as possible during my coat drive. I’m really trying to make a difference in my community before I leave for the National Pageant later in November,” said Edwards who won the title of Miss New Jersey Pre-Teen from the National American Miss organization this past August.

“For more than 20 years we have been working to provide a warm coat to anyone who needs one. We are so thankful for our many coat drive ambassadors, like Nyla, who volunteer their time, resources and energy to help their neighbors in need. Together, we can reach our goal of warming one million people each winter, one community at a time!” commented Jennifer Stockard, President and Chief Executive Officer of One Warm Coat.

Since its inception in 1992, One Warm Coat has worked with its volunteers to give away over 4 million coats: www.onewarmcoat.org.
