SOMA Hosts Forum: Becoming Age-Friendly Communities for Seniors, June 5

South Orange and Maplewood are hosting a joint forum on Sunday, June 5 from 2-4 p.m., at The Woodland in Maplewood, to bring the community together to discuss how to improve livability for seniors in the two towns.

The forum is the culmination of a recent $35,000 grant from the Grotta Fund for Senior Care that the two towns were awarded.

The towns are applying for an additional grant of $75,000 for each town for three years, according to group member Irene Dunsavage. “Focus groups have been held as well as surveys taken,” said Dunsavage. “This final forum will collect additional information to add to the proposal submitted on June 30.”

Organizers hope to have a wide representation of seniors to gather as much information as possible regarding services currently available to SOMA seniors, and what the greatest needs are to facilitate seniors aging in place in the town towns. Housing, health issues, financial concerns and transportation are among the identified obstacles identified thus far, Dunsavage said.

South Orange is providing transportation for residents to the Woodland, where the event will be held.
