To the Editor:
I’ve lived in Maplewood most of my life. I graduated from Columbia High School in 1962. I raised my children here and all three of them graduated from CHS. Although I no longer have children in the school system, I care deeply about this community and its future. I’m writing to express my strong support for Shannon Cuttle for the Board of Education.
Shannon is uniquely qualified to be on the board of education and would be an outstanding BOE member. With a professional background as a teacher, school administrator and education policy consultant, Shannon is deeply knowledgeable in the areas that matter for the BOE. Other towns and organizations hire Shannon as an educational consultant. We’re lucky that Shannon is volunteering to bring the same expertise and energy to our community!
Like me, Shannon cares deeply about the future of South Orange/Maplewood. Shannon has demonstrated this commitment by supporting our youth in many ways. Shannon co-organized the CHS food pantry to help end food insecurity at CHS, has mentored students in the SOMA Action Youth Leadership Committee, is a Maplewood Library Trustee and is on the advisory board of the Parenting Center. Shannon attends BOE meetings and follows the development and implementation of education policy, always thinking about how it will impact students.
Shannon comes to this BOE race not as an advocate for a particular child or group, but as an advocate for a system that creates a climate and culture that uplifts every single student. In these divisive times, that is the perspective we need on our BOE. Look at what Shannon has accomplished as a citizen volunteer, and just imagine how Shannon could make a difference in our community as a BOE member with the ability to impact district policy! I’m voting for Shannon and I hope you do, too.
