2015 Martin Luther King Observance, JANUARY 19, 2015

January 19, 2015 @ 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm

Free

The South Orange Maplewood Community Coalition on Race will hold its 14th annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Observance on Monday, January 19, 2014 at 2:00 pm at St. Joseph Church, 767 Prospect Street, Maplewood, New Jersey. The event is free and open to all.

The keynote speaker at this year’s observance is Mr. Joseph Ford, a resident of Maplewood, who will share his experiences working for voting rights in the 1960s in Mississippi and Georgia, and his participation in the 1965 Selma to Montgomery march. There will also be a stirring re-enactment of one of Dr. King’s speeches, music by Voices in Harmony, jazz musicians, and selected readings from a cross-section of the faith and youth communities.

The celebration continues with a Volunteer Fair and reception at 3:30 in the church hall The Volunteer Fair offers information and opportunities from local community groups, including those housing and feeding the poor; and mentoring and tutoring our youth. There will also be projects with instant impact that can be completed right then and there. Food pantry donations are encouraged and welcome. As in prior years, the Celebration is sure to be meaningful, inspirational, and attended by hundreds of residents and neighbors.
