22nd Annual Evening of Roses: Witness to Liberation

May 3, 2015 @ 3:00 pm - 4:00 pm

$75

The Sister Rose Thering Fund for Education in Jewish-Christian Studies will recognize survivors and liberators on the 70th anniversary of the liberation of the concentration camps in Europe on Sunday, May 3, at its 22th annual Evening of Roses fundraiser. Two Humanitarian of the Year awards will be presented, one to Carolyn Dorfman, child of survivors and Director of the Carolyn Dorfman Dance Company; the other to Tom Dugan, actor/author of the recent off-Broadway production of “Wiesenthal.” The program will include a dance presentation from “A Dance of Hope” featuring Katlyn Waldo, principal dancer of the Carolyn Dorfman Dance Company. Leo Grinhauz will perform a cello solo from Bach Prelude to the Third Suite in C. Entitled “Witness to Liberation” the program also will recognize a group of survivors from our community.

The formal program begins at 3 p.m. in Jubilee Hall Auditorium on the Seton Hall University South Orange campus, 400 South Orange Ave, South Orange. This benefit event supports graduate scholarships for New Jersey educators to participate in Jewish-Christian Studies course at the University.

The Sister Rose Thering Fund is dedicated to advancing the legacy of Sister Rose Thering by fostering understanding and cooperation among Jews, Christians and people of other religious traditions through advocacy and education. More than 350 New Jersey educators have benefitted from educational scholarships made available at Seton Hall University through the Fund, impacting more 150,000 students throughout the state.

Deborah Lerner Duane, chairman of the Sister Rose Thering Fund, said, “One of Sister Rose Thering’s many gifts was an ability to recognize in others their own desire to create a world free of religious prejudice.”

“We are also enormously grateful to the community, which continues to acknowledge and support the work of the Sister Rose Thering Fund for Education in Jewish-Christian Studies through both volunteer activities on behalf of the Fund, and its generosity as we raise the necessary dollars to provide scholarships for educators who enroll in Seton Hall’s Jewish-Christian Studies program,” she explained.

The Sister Rose Thering Fund for Education in Jewish-Christian Studies was created and named in honor of Sister Rose Thering, O.P., Ph.D., in recognition and appreciation of her exemplary dedication throughout her life and that continuing legacy to improving Jewish-Christian relations through teacher education, especially at the elementary and secondary school levels. The goals of the Fund’s programs are to reduce prejudice born of ignorance and misperception, to promote means for the conveying the richness of the Jewish and Christian traditions accurately and without bias and to foster cooperation among Jews and Christians in areas of common social welfare. More than 350 teachers throughout New Jersey have benefited from Fund scholarships for their studies at Seton Hall University’s Jewish-Christian Studies graduate program during the past two decades, and have had an impact on more than 150,000 students in their classes.
