American Classics Book Discussion Series
The Portrait of a Lady by Henry James
A lucid tragedy exploring the distance between money and happiness. The beautiful Isabel Archer, determined to enjoy her freedom and fortune and to
decide her own fate, is drawn to a charming and cultivated man who is
revealed to be cruel and stifling. In this portrait of a ‘young woman affronting her destiny’, Henry James created one of his most magnificent heroines, and a story of intense poignancy.
