Conversation on Race

May 10, 2017 @ 7:30 pm - 9:00 pm

In support of its integration mission, South Orange/Maplewood Community Coalition on Race has sponsored interracial dialogues called Conversations on Race for the past 20 years. This year, the topic is Race & Privilege: Raising Consciousness to Address Racial Inequities.  The format will include a racially integrated panel sharing their knowledge and experiences about how privilege plays out in economics, education, housing, the criminal justice system and other areas of our daily lives.  Next, participants will break into small groups to hold candid, facilitated table discussions using suggested starter questions, and then each table will formulate strategies and solutions to counter privilege and share their solutions with the entire group and with the panel for comment.

Panelists Include:
Khadijah Costley White, Assistant Professor in the Department of Journalism and Media Studies at Rutgers whose research is on race, gender and politics in the media

Demelza Baer, Esq., a Policy Counsel for the New Jersey Institute for Social Justice, where she directs the Institute’s Economic Mobility Initiative

Jane Bleasdale, Professor at University of San Francisco, whose research is focused on equity and inclusion.

David Troutt, Professor of law (Justice John Francis Scholar) and founding director of the Rutgers Center on Law in Metropolitan Equity who writes about the intersections of race, class and place
