Fundamentals of Web Programming for grades 6-8
Students will be given their own accounts on an internet server and be taught to build their own websites. They will also make their own simple educational video games to run on the desktop as well as the iPad. Along the way they will learn the basics of HTML (including the canvas element), CSS, JavaScript and jQuery, as well as the styles of procedural, functional and event-driven programming and just a touch of UNIX. Don’t let the vocabulary scare you. No prior experience is required and students help each other learn in a relaxed and non-competitive environment. For grades 6-8. W. SCOTT STORNETTA, Ph.D., is a mathematics teacher at Columbia High School. He is retired from a career in research and consulting and has worked in computer science and taught programming for many years.
