Hear MLK Scholars Discuss Global Justice at the Petersheim Academic Exposition

April 24, 2015 @ 11:00 am - 12:30 pm

Free

The Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. (MLK) Leadership Program will host the Mandela-King Symposium on Global Justice on Friday, April 24, 2015 from 11 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. in the Walsh Library’s Beck Rooms as part of the Petersheim Academic Exposition. The event is free and open to the Seton Hall University community and public.

“I met Dr. Matthew Petersheim, the namesake of the Exposition, while he and I served on the Council Against Racial and Ethic Discrimination (CARED) in the 1980’s,” said MLK Leadership Program Director Rev. Forrest Pritchett, Ph.D. “We became close friends as a result of that work. On several occasions we discussed how the student academic culture needed to be elevated, to the level of attention that any institution places on its athletics. Several of us began the process of collaborating with him to design the Exposition concept.”

MLK Scholars and Rev. Pritchett will honor the legacy of the late Petersheim. “The symposium will highlight the scholarly abilities of undergraduate and graduate students who wish to make the world a better place,” said Rev. Pritchett.

30 presenters will collaborate to focus on initiatives that Mandela and Dr. King, Jr. would advocate in the 21st century global community, including: Peace Awareness; Economic Literacy; Rapid Orientation to College Development (ROTC); and Science Technology Engineering and Math (STEM).

“As a MLK Scholar we take Mandela’s expression that ‘education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world’ to heart. We are taught the importance of education and spreading awareness throughout the community; the opportunity to present this year at the Exposition does just that,” said MLK Scholar Abraam Dawoud.

Established in 1970, the MLK Leadership Program, through its primary organization, the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Scholarship Association, is the longest existing servant leadership program on campus. Each year, it selects exceptional students for partial tuition scholarships and provides them with management and leadership development skills. To date, the program has been selected twice in the last 20 years as “The Outstanding Organization of the Year” and boasts graduates that have received national fellowships to pursue graduate and doctoral studies. Today, the program is comprised of scholars from eight different states, who have an average GPA of 3.5.

The Petersheim Academic Exposition 2015 Share, Honor, Unite will take place on Monday, April 20 – Saturday, April 25, 2015 in celebration of the scholastic accomplishments and academic interests of the entire Seton Hall University community, including both undergraduate and graduate students.
