FreeMAPLEWOOD GLEE CLUB TO HOST “OPEN SING”
If you’re a guy who likes to sing, whether seriously or in the shower, the Maplewood Glee Club has an invitation for you! The group is hosting its first-ever Open Sing on Monday, September 12th at 7:45pm at the Dehart Community Center (120 Burnett Street) in Maplewood.
“It’s an open invitation. No auditions. No pressure. Just come hang out and sing a few songs,” says Arthur Heyl, newly-elected President of the Glee Club. “We sing everything from George Gershwin to Billy Joel, from choral classics to doo-wop. All ages and all levels of ability are welcome!”
.
Founded in 1946, the group is dedicated to good fellowship and good singing. New member Edmund Jones says it’s “an amazingly friendly and welcoming group, probably two-thirds about the music and one-third about the fun of being with a bunch of guys.” Tenor Steve Adamczyk adds “I joined the Glee Club because I wanted a way back into singing, and it was a nice low-stress way of doing it.”
Current members hail not only from Maplewood, but from nearby Union, Summit, Westfield, Cranford, Chatham, Roselle Park, and as far away as Berkeley Heights, Glen Ridge, Livingston, and Green Village.
Besides yearly Spring and Holiday concerts, the Maplewood Glee Club is known for its annual music scholarship, given each year to a local high school senior planning a career in music. “Our alliance with local high schools… is a great way to give back to our communities,” says past President Erik Solberg.
But Monday, September 12th is a night for singing. “If you’re looking for a chance to sing, we hope you’ll come make some noise with us,” says Heyl. “It’s what men who sing do.”
