MLK Leadership Program’s Second Annual Ball: Rhythm of the Soul

March 21, 2015 @ 8:00 pm - 10:00 pm

$6

Performer Wenonah Brooks and pianist Aaron Graves will headline Seton Hall University’s Martin Luther King Jr. Leadership Program’s Second Annual Ball: Rhythm of the Soul on Saturday, March 21 at 8 p.m. in University Center, Main Lounge. All proceeds will benefit the organization’s outreach programs.

The goal of the four outreach programs is to provide MLK Scholars the opportunity to give back to their community as well as execute projects that coincide with their passions. The first program, Operation Gratitude, works to provide servicemen with care packages and love and support from the organization. Next, Operation X and Little Misses Forum offer leadership development training, mentorship and scholastic guidance to young men and women in underprivileged communities. Lastly, Scholar Buddies aims to tutor elementary school students.

The Ball will be a celebration of the progression of African-American music starting back in the 1800’s through today, genres will include: ragtime, Negro spirituals/gospel, swing/bebop, R&B and contemporary hip-hop. Special performances will be given by Seton Hall University student Ashley Jefferson, Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Incorporated Rho Lambda Lambda (PLL) Chapter, and the Seton Hall University Gospel Choir, as well as Hot 97’s DJ Wallah.

This event is open to the Seton Hall University community and the public. Tickets can be purchased for $6 at https://www.eventbrite.com/o/mlksa-7873118730. For more information, please contact: Crystal Watson at crystal.watson@student.shu.edu or Sasha Pierre-Louise at pierresa@shu.edu.

Established in 1970, the MLK Leadership Program is the oldest and most prestigious servant leadership program at Seton Hall University and is one of the earliest such programs in the United States. Not only does the MLK Leadership Program provide partial tuition scholarships to exceptional students each year, but it also provides management and leadership development skills to its scholars. Scholars learn how to execute programs and events from the conception, development and implementation. Furthermore, scholars are committed to community service by completing more than 40 hours of service annually. The MLK scholars work in a variety of settings including middle schools to offer motivational programming and after school classroom reinforcement or conducting urban environmental policy workshops.
