Special Screening: Left Bank Bookseller
A Celebration of Literary History and Freedom of Speech.
Thursday, October 13 Main Library 7:00 pm
When prohibitions against obscenity were making it impossible for James Joyce to publish his revolutionary novel Ulysses, Sylvia Beach, pioneering proprietor of the Shakespeare and Company bookshop in Paris took great risks to publish it, with the encouragement and help of her lover and soul-mate, Adrienne Monnier.
The book caused a literary sensation and the first edition sold out immediately.

The film re-creates the bohemian milieu of 1920s Paris when Shakespeare and Company was a mecca for the literary elite of the era.

A Q. and A. with the director, Lisa Reznick, will follow.
