Looking to start the New Year in a healthy and holistic way?

The folks at Wellspring Health Collective on Valley Street in Maplewood have the event for you — Jean Vitrano’s 3rd Annual New Year’s Day Guided Meditation and Bell Ringing.

The event will take place on Thursday, January 1 from 4:00-5:15 p.m. (suggested donation $10). Jean Vitrano will host a guided meditation that reflects on the closing year and encourage participants to set their intentions for the New Year. The meditation will be followed by the Buddhist tradition of ringing the bell 108 times. Participants are invited to bring a bell if they have one. No meditation experience is needed.

Vitrano explains that, in the Japanese Buddhist tradition, the belief is that each reverberation of the bell will chase away all the negative experiences, wrong deeds and bad luck that the past year may have brought. Bells are rung exactly 108 times in keeping with the Buddhist belief that each reverberation symbolically represents the purging of the 108 bonno or mortal desires, such as greed and jealousy. Wellspring Health Collective was founded in 2012 by Sue Rexford and Lynda Rountree with the mission of bringing the “best practitioners in health and wellness under one roof” in Maplewood.

The collective, which is located at 697 Valley Street, is a New Year’s resolution dream come true. It offers discussion and support groups on divorce, personal organization and yoga, massage and bodywork — including reiki, swedish massage, shiatsu, reflexology, pre- and post-natal, breast treatments, deep tissue, sports and neuromuscular massage — and professionals specializing in chiropractic, psychotherapy, movement, aromatherapy, nutrition, and meditation workshops. (A full roster of practitioners and events can be found at www.wellspringhealthnj.com and on Facebook at facebook.com/WellspringHealthCollective.)

Recently, the collective held its first annual Holiday Open House on December 14. Rountree explained, “After two years building our amazing roster of practitioners, groups and other offerings, we were all proud to open our doors to the public so they could experience a new form of massage, learn about somatics, and partake in a pilates class, among many other opportunities.”

In the two years since Wellspring was founded, some of the area’s top massage and bodywork therapists, psychotherapists, and other wellness practitioners have come together to provide services in renewal, relaxation and growth. Drawing customers from Maplewood, South Orange, Millburn, Short Hills and surrounding towns, Wellspring provides individual appointments as well as group classes and workshops.
