South Orange Dining: Fox and Falcon to Offer ‘Simplicity Elevated’ in Multiple Spaces

Looking for fine dining? Delightful and imaginative cocktails? A place to see live music? A place to bring the family for more casual food? The Fox and Falcon, which officially opened last night, November 29, checks all those boxes, and boasts acclaimed executive chef Matt Ruzga.

David Massoni knows the secret to being able to offer all these things. Massoni is from a family of restaurateurs, is a local resident, and was waiting for the right place to become available. When South Mountain Tavern closed he jumped on the opportunity.

“I saw this space had the potential to be a perfect restaurant,” said Massoni. The Fox and Falcon will make use of its many different spaces to offer customers a variety of food and social experiences.

The Snug will retain its name and character as a quiet, Irish country pub. But there’s so much more. There are several bars, a main dining area, and the two Essex Rooms.

The Essex Rooms are a paired bar and dining area, with large windows facing Valley Street. “This will be a quieter, more subdued area, for regular dining and private parties,” said Massoni.

The Fox and Falcon offers several bars with different personalities. The main bar will have live music on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. A DJ night is being considered. And to keep the evening lively, there is a dance floor.

And the main dining room is where you’ll find food from celebrated chef Matt Ruzga, recently from Del Posto in NYC, and SOMA resident. Ruzga is described as a “master of execution, who lets the ingredients shine.” The dining room menu will feature local foods, and like many farm to table restaurants, The Fox and Falcon strives to build lasting relationships with local farmers.

“Many of the foods Ruzga creates are made from 4-5 ingredients,” said Massoni.

The Falcon and Fox offers varied experiences and price points, and they hope you’ll find yourself coming 2-3 times a week.

“We’d like to be the clubhouse for our community,” said Massoni. “We’ll make it fun to meet old friends, make new ones, tuck in, and listen to music.” Reservations for the main dining area are going fast. Check in with Open Table to reserve your spot at SOMA’s new clubhouse.
