The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office (ECPO) and the South Orange Police are investigating a death that occurred on Hixon Place in South Orange on Thursday afternoon.
The incident is under investigation, and “we cannot release the identity of the person pending notification of the next of kin,” Chief Assistant Prosecutor Thomas S. Fennelly told Village Green. The cause and manner of death is pending an autopsy by the Regional Medical Examiner’s Office.
The victim was a 70-year-old man who was found outside his residence, said Fennelly in an update later Thursday night. “The initial call was at approximately 2:51 p.m. and the [man] was pronounced dead at the scene.”
“At this point, there is no need for residents to be concerned or alarmed,” Fennelly said. “It appears to be an isolated incident.”
The South Orange Police received a 911 call from a passerby, and police discovered the body at approximately 2:50 p.m., the prosecutor said.
Village President Sheena Collum confirmed the death was being investigated.
