Updated: The story has been updated with information from an eyewitness. A co-worker reports that the injured man did not have a heart attack and was not admitted to the ICU.

Maplewood EMS firefighters provided CPR Monday morning, May 16, to a subcontractor working at Columbia High School, reviving the man before transporting him to Newark Beth Israel Medical Center.

“Engine 32 was returning from a mutual aid call in Orange and was right by the school when the job came in,” reported Deputy Chief and EMS Coordinator Michael DeMartini in an email. “Rescue responded. AED [automated external defibrillator] was attached and there was no shock advised. The patient began to breathe after one round of CPR.”

A co-worker who was an eyewitness to the incident said that the worker did not suffer a heart attack as previously reported, but had “fallen hard” and hit his head, becoming unconscious. The co-worker said that the injured man was not admitted to the ICU, but was admitted to the Newark-Beth Israel after spending 24 hours in the emergency room. The co-worker reports that the injured man is in stable condition.
