Police removed a body from the brook behind the Maplewood Memorial Library Friday, according to Capt. Dawn Williams of the Maplewood Police Department.

Police received a report of a possible deceased person at around 8:17 a.m., said Williams. A 61-year-old Caucasian man was found; investigators from the Essex County Medical Examiner’s Office determined the death was not suspicious. Police had cordoned off the area around the library parking lot and the park behind the library until shortly after 11:30 a.m. when the body was removed.

Police are currently working to identify the deceased man’s next of kin and no further information is available, said Williams.

Workers at the library looking out the window saw the body on a stretcher, said one staff member. Earlier, the police had asked staff to close the window blinds and the library did not open at its usual time. The library reopened at 11:30 a.m.

The Village Green will follow up and report any other updates to this story.
