Maplewood Police caught a man wanted for a homicide in Georgia after locating him outside an address on Burnett Avenue on Tuesday.
Police learned that 36-year-old Joseph Priester, who was being sought by authorities for felony warrants including the homicide, was possibly at the address, said Sgt. Christopher Black. After contacting Georgia authorities to confirm the warrants were active, MPD Patrol Officers and Detectives set up surveillance and cordoned off the area, said Black.
The MPD requested assistance from the United States Marshals and then from the Essex County Sheriff’s Office Emergency Response Team (ERT). While the ERT was responding, Priester was seen inside a vehicle attempting to leave the parking lot, Black said. Officers conducted a felony stop of the vehicle and arrested Priester without further incident. He was processed at Maplewood Police headquarters and then transported to Essex County jail to await extradition.
The Maplewood Police Department would like to thank the Essex County Sheriff’s Department for their assistance, said Black.
