Maplewood Makos Take 14 First-Place Finishes at Division 3 Championships

The Maplewood Makos took home 14 first-place finishes at the North Jersey Summer Swim League Division 3 Championships at Morris Township’s Ginty Pool on Monday, July 27, with strong results across age groups.

Maplewood also logged 12 second-place and 14 third-place finishes in the team’s second year under the direction of Makos Head Coach Valerie Houghton.

Both the Maplewood Makos and the West Orange Wave swim teams — whose rivalry heated up this season — won 14 events.

Breaststroke: The Makos exhibited a strong showing in breaststroke, with four first-place finishes, including Leonor Genung (1:22.81) in the 8-and-under girls 25-meter event. Lulu Armentrout (30.35) and Mila Lenard, (32.03) came in third and fourth, respectively. Thomas Keenan (26.97) won it for the boys.

Zaidyn Roman also won first place in the boys 9-10 25-meter breaststroke with a 21.65 finish.

Wolf Carney (49.65) took second in the boys 11-12 50-meter breaststroke.

In the 13-14 girls 50-meter event, Una Maksimovic placed third with a time of 44.25 seconds.

Harlow Hatch took second place in 50-meter breaststroke, finishing in 39.28 seconds.

Mason Keith won his event in 31.40 seconds.

Individual Medley: Wolf Carney took third place in the 100-meter 12-and-under boys event with a time of 1:39.75.

In the girls 13-and-over category, Nola Meehan took second place (1:14.51), followed by Ashna Patel (1:16.41) in third.

Mason Keith topped the field in the 13-and-over boys category, clocking in at 1:04.71.

Freestyle: Ned Aglione took first place in the 8-and-under boys 25-meter freestyle event, touching the wall in 19.03 seconds, followed by Teddy Berman in second place (20.88).

In the 9-10 boys 25-meter freestyle event, Theodore Walters came in second with a time of 16.19 seconds.

Felix Navarro took second place in the boys 11-12 50-meter freestyle event with a time of 35.32 seconds, followed by Will Ledbetter (35.71) in third.

In the 13-14 age group, Grace Dalton finished in 31.27 seconds for a third-place finish in the girls event, and Henry Ezell swam the 50 free in 30.78 seconds for third place in the boys event.

Nola Meehan tied for first place with Elise Li of Madison with identical times of 29.03 seconds. They were followed by Ashna Patel (29.14) in third and Harlow Hatch (29.38) in fourth.

Backstroke: Teddy Berman took first place for the 8-and-under boys, swimming the 25-meter backstroke event in 25.68 seconds. Andrew Dunne finished third with 28.90.

Zaldyn Roman won his event in the boys 9-10 event with a time of 20.69 seconds.

For the 11-12 boys Reed Keenan placed second with a 46.47 time in the 50-meter backstroke.

Peyton Meda (37.50) logged a third-place finish for the 13-14 girls event.

In the 15-18 age group, Caroline Lembrich won it for the girls in 32.38 seconds. Jacob Gompers took third for the boys in 33.28 seconds.

Butterfly: In the 8-and-under 25-meter butterfly event, Leonor Genung topped the girls with a 19.57-second finish. Ned Aglione also finished first for the boys with a time of 21.13 seconds, with Thomas Keenan coming in third in 25.91 seconds.

Theodore Walters took second place for the boys 9-10 age group, swimming the 25-meter event in 16.93 seconds.

In the boys 11-12 50-meter butterfly, Felix Navarro took second place with a time of 41.57 seconds, followed by Will Ledbetter in third place with a time of 43.72 seconds.

Henry Ezell came in second with a 34.34-second time.

Ashna Patel took third in the girls 15-18 event, finishing in 31.82 seconds.

Medley Relay: The Maplewood Makos (Leo Santana, Jackson Javate, Felix Navarro and Wolf Carney) placed second in the boys 12-and-under 100-meter medley relay, finishing in 1:35.32.

The team (Caroline Lembrich, Leo Rafalin, Henry Ezell and Nola Meehan) finished second in the mixed 13-and-over 200-meter medley relay with a 2:11.52 finish

Freestyle Relay: The Maplewood Makos (Leonor Genung, Hadley Henkel-Lorenz, Thomas Keenan and Ned Aglione) won the mixed 8-and-under 100-meter freestyle relay with a 1:25.06 finish.

In the 12-and-under category, the Makos girls (Eleanor Henkel-Lorenz, Finley Hemmer, Harlow Armentrout and Zoey Santana) finished in 1:25.06 for a second-place finish. The boys (Will Ledbetter, Zaidyn Roman, Theodore Walters and Reed Keenan) took first place with a time of 1:10.56.

The Maplewood Makos (Ben Midland, Peyton Meda, Grace Dalton and Mason Keith) won the final event at divisionals — the mixed 13-and-over 200-meter freestyle relay event — with a time of 1:54.90.
