Maplewood Middle School’s new Assistant Principal Dion Patterson promises to bring his “talents and passion for education” to his new post, starting November 30.

Patterson was appointed by the South Orange-Maplewood Board of Education at a special meeting on September 29.

Currently, Patterson serves as Vice Principal and Supervisor of Community Programs at Piscataway Township Schools, Piscataway, NJ. Prior to his appointment as Vice Principal in Piscataway, he served as Middle School Teacher/Coach/Lead District Evaluator/Apprentice School Leader in East Orange STEM Academy, and as a Middle School Teacher in the East Orange School District.

Patterson received his BA in English from Morehouse College, GA in 2004 and his MS in Reading & Literacy and second MS in Curriculum, Instruction & Assessment both from Walden University, MN, in 2011.

Upon accepting the appointment, Patterson said, “I am truly humbled and honored to have the opportunity to join Maplewood Middle School with wonderful staff, parents, and students who are excited about learning. I bring my talents & passion for education and together I am ready to do exceptional things.”

Patterson joins new MMS Principal Dara Gronau and long-time Assistant Principal Louis Brown as a building leader. Patterson fills the position vacated by Marc Gold who left the district to serve as Assistant Principal of Frelinghuysen Middle School in Morristown. Gold’s last day was Sept. 23; retired Columbia High School Assistant Principal Michael Healy is filling in as interim AP until Patterson starts on November 30.
