The South Orange – Maplewood Board of Education will hold a special meeting Tuesday, November 10 at 6:15 p.m., to vote on ratifying the agreement the district has negotiated with the South Orange/Maplewood Education Association (SOMEA).

The district and SOMEA confirmed they had reached a tentative agreement in September. BOE member Beth Daugherty chaired the negotiations task force. Superintendent Dr. John Ramos said then he was “excited that the win-win approach to the process resulted in an outcome that is good for all students.” BOE President Wayne Eastman praised Ramos for setting a “calm, open tone” that helped the negotiation process go smoothly.

It was in stark contrast to the last contract ratification in June 2014, which followed more than a year of sometimes acrimonious negotiations. That agreement covered the period from July 1, 2013 through June 30, 2015 and gave teachers a 4.25% salary increase over two years.

The details of the recent contract will not be made public until it is officially ratified.
