The sound of music flowed through Sterling Hall Tuesday night as South Orange Middle School (SOMS) students performed in the annual Spring Band and Chorus Concert.

The performance featured the 6th, 7th and 8th grade Band and Chorus, the Bassoon Trio, the 8th Grade Clarinet Ensemble, the Select Chorus and the Jazz Band.

Helmed by Jake Ezzo, the 6th, 7th and 8th grade chorus ensembles wowed the crowd with their stellar singing. The Select Chorus performed a gorgeous version of “Earth Song,” for which Ezzo said the students received nearly perfect scores at the recent High Note Music Festival.

Under the direction of Don Tighe, the bands showed why the South Orange – Maplewood school district is renowned for its music program. The 8th grade Symphonic Band stood out for its lovely performance of the Children’s March, which Tighe said could be an especially challenging piece to master.

The evening closed out with the Jazz Band’s rendition of Duke Ellington’s C-Jam Blues.
