South Mountain YMCA to Host Annual Healthy Kids Day May 4

From the South Mountain YMCA:

The South Mountain YMCA is holding a free community event to inspire more kids to keep their minds and bodies active all summer long. Healthy Kids Day®, the Y’s national initiative to improve families’ health and well-being, starting at 8:45 am with a Family Fun Run at Underhill Field, Columbia High School then at 10am onto the main event at 13 Jefferson Ave. Maplewood, NJ featuring bouncy houses, a climbing wall, obstacle course, demo classes, games, healthy cooking demonstrations, arts and crafts, DJ, face painting and more to motivate and teach families how to develop healthy routines at home.

“When a child is healthy, happy, and supported they can make great things happen,” says Jason Kelly, Senior Director of Youth Sports and Wellness. “We believe in the potential of all children, and we strive to help kids find that potential within themselves. A child’s development is never on vacation and Healthy Kids Day is a great opportunity to educate families and motivate kids to stay active in spirit, mind and body throughout the summer.”

Jason Kelly, Senior Director of Youth Sports and Wellness will be available to speak with media about the importance of keeping kids’ bodies and minds active when out of school.

One in three U.S. children is obese, and when summertime hits, kids will be more idle. Research shows that without access to out-of-school physical and learning activities, kids fall behind academically and gain weight twice as fast during summer than the school year. Healthy Kids Day is an opportunity for the community to focus on what kids need to grow and achieve all summer long.
