Columbia High School students are set to take midterms this week, but the impending blizzard has meant the South Orange – Maplewood School District is making contingency plans for the schedule.

CHS Principal Elizabeth Aaron sent the following letter to parents on Monday:

Elizabeth M. Aaron, MAT, M.Ed. Principal

January 26, 2015

Dear CHS Families:

Thank you for your assistance getting your students safely to school this morning and for your support and encouragement as they will use the next day (or more) to help you manage the storm at home while they continue to study for midterms and work on other school assignments.

This letter will explain our plans for the next few days of school based on the most likely school closing scenarios.

WHAT HAPPENS IF THERE’S A SNOW DAY ON TUESDAY, JANUARY 27TH?

Midterm exams for periods 5, 8 and 9 will be moved to Friday, January 30th. Wednesday’s and Thursday’s midterm exam schedules remain as previously indicated.

WHAT HAPPENS IF THERE’S A SNOW DAY ON WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 28TH?

Midterm exams for periods 6, 4 and 2 will be moved to Monday, February 2nd. Thursday’s midterm schedule remains as scheduled (periods 7, 3 and 1). Friday’s midterms are periods 5, 8 and 9.

The bell schedule for exams is on the CHS webpage: www.somsd.k12.nj.us
Click on “schools,” then click on “Columbia High School.” The schedule is on the right.

WHAT IF THERE’S A DELAYED OPENING ON WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 28TH?

Reporting time for staff and students will be 10:00 a.m. The modified midterm schedule is as follows:

Reporting time: 10 a.m. (doors open)

Period 4 EXAM:  10:10 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.

Period 2 EXAM:  11:40 a.m. – 1 p.m.

LUNCH:  1 p.m. – 1:45 p.m.

Period 6 EXAM: 1:50 p.m. – 3:10 p.m.

Please remember that students DO NOT report for study halls during our exam period. Lunch is available in the cafeteria. Students who have period 6 lunch finish their day at the end of the period 2 exam.

WHEN WILL THE SECOND SEMESTER/THIRD MARKING PERIOD BEGIN?

The very first day after the conclusion of midterm exams. Student assignments for 3rd marking period health and PE classes are in Powerschool. Students will not receive new paper schedules for the new marking, so please be sure that your student logs into Powerschool to check his or her new class, location, and teacher.

Please note that the deadlines for grade submissions from teachers will be adjusted accordingly based on the amount of school time lost due to snow days and/or delayed openings.

I announced this morning at CHS that we would adjust and communicate these changes to our families. Please review this information with your students and encourage them to plan and review accordingly.

Best regards and stay warm and safe,

Elizabeth Aaron
