The South Orange/ Maplewood Community Coalition on Race is once again commemorating Dr. Martin Luther King’s birthday with luminaries on the evening of his birthday. They will be illuminated on the evening of Dr. King’s birthday celebration – 1/16/17. The luminaries serve as a reminder of Dr. King’s message of light and peace and they’re also a great way to have a conversation with kids about his message. The CCR has found that as kids decorate the luminary bags, they start asking questions about Dr. King, race and the civil rights movement which all serve as teachable opportunities.

Each luminary kit is $10 each and comes with 4 bags and 4 tea lights. You can purchase the luminaries in South Orange at Sparkhouse Toys and at Kitchen a la Mode or in Maplewood at [Words] Bookstore and at Retail Therapy.

Luminaries can be purchased up until the day of January 16. In addition, they will be for sale at the CCR’s MLK Day Observance Celebration.  (Call the retail stores in advance to ensure they still have supplies).
