Ken Mullen, formerly of Morris Knolls High School and the Morris Hills Regional District in Morris County, is now interim athletic director of the South Orange-Maplewood School District.
The appointment was made on Monday, September 17, 2018 at the monthly South Orange-Maplewood Board of Education meeting.
According to his LinkedIn profile, Mullen received his B.A. from Southern Connecticut State University in 1978, and a Master of Education from East Stroudsburg University in 1991.
Mullen resigned from his position of Supervisor of Student Services/ Athletics, Morris Knolls High School/MHRD, effective July 31, 2018, according to a Morris Hills Regional newsletter. The Daily Record categorized Mullen’s departure as a retirement.
Mullen steps in for Larry Busichio, who is currently suspended as SOMSD Athletic Director. Busichio and two other district employees were suspended in August after the district learned of “highly disturbing information” about the management of the baseball program via a lawsuit that has been brought by a former baseball player and Columbia High School student alleging bullying. Former CHS baseball coach Joe Fischetti was subsequently fired as baseball coach at Newark Academy.
Despite two open public record requests, one to the district and one to the Superior Court of Essex County, Village Green has been unable to obtain materials related to the “highly disturbing information” thus far. The court responded that Village Green should “allow 4-6 weeks for complete processing and delivery of the requested documents.”
Mullen’s effective start date was listed as 9/5/18 on the personnel resolution (see below), with an end date “TBD.” He is being paid a salary of $127,000/year.
