Valley Street Construction NJAW

We hope you are headed out on vacation soon, because local roads are getting hairy.

Downtown Millburn has become a motorist’s quagmire with its closure of Main Street between Essex and Millburn Avenue from July 13 to August 13.

And, in Maplewood, New Jersey American Water will be doing work on Valley Street between Tuscan and Millburn Avenue beginning July 28 and continuing for one month. Specifics of exact days and times when the road will be closed to traffic are not yet known.

According to a Nixle message from the Maplewood Police Dept. sent on Monday at 3:57 p.m.:

Valley St. Construction will begin on Thursday, July 28, 2016 . However, this week Valley St. will not be [a]ffected and will be open in both directions. The construction company will be putting down bypass piping and digging on the side streets of Valley St (between Millburn Ave and Tuscan Rd).

Township Administrator Joseph Manning said that the Township will continue to alert the general public through Nixel, the town website, Facebook and Twitter. (Visit the Maplewood Township website for more information: www.twp.maplewood.nj.us).

As of this morning, Township Engineer Paul J. Kittner, Jr. reports that the contractor will begin “various service replacements tomorrow on side streets; however, the closure of Valley will be sometime next week, which is affected by progress of the service replacements and weather.” Kittner also provided the following detailed information on the scope of the project.

New Jersey American Water
Water Main Rehabilitation Project

New Jersey American water began conducting 2016 Water system Improvements in Maplewood Township earlier this summer. This work includes cleaning and lining of water mains.

The project is scheduled from June 2016 thru September 2016.

The work will take place on Valley Street between Tuscan Road and Millburn Avenue, on Millburn Avenue between Valley Street and Main Street in Millburn, on Crypress Street between Millburn Avenue and Myrtle Avenue in Millburn, and on the full lengths of Cedar Lane and East Cedar Lane.

Residents are encouraged to consider alternate routes during construction.

Please see here for additional information regarding Street Closures in Maplewood related to this project.

During this time, NJAW’s contractor will be cleaning and lining water main on Maplewood streets. Cleaning and lining is the process of removing sediment from inside a water main, then lining the inner surface of the main with cement. This procedure significantly improves the reliability of water service, water quality and fire flows in the area.

As part of the project, NJAW will also be replacing fire hydrants, valves and any service lines from the main to the curb box that are made of galvanized iron pipe. NJAW assured the Township earlier this week that their contractor will work quickly and diligently to minimize inconvenience to residents.
