Seton Hall University’s Class of 2014 has a significantly higher employment rate than the national average six months after graduation. A University Career Center-sponsored survey of the alumni shows 86 percent of the recent graduates are employed in a career-related job six months post-graduation. The National Association of Colleges and Employers’ Preliminary Results Report puts the national employment rate for graduates with bachelor’s degrees, excluding post-graduation internships, at 56.9 percent.
Further analysis of the Seton Hall Class of 2014’s employment success shows 81 percent had at least one semester of experiential education – internships, clinical rotations, student teaching or other professional experience – on their resumes while at the University. These programs take students out of the classroom and into the professional environment, either as part of their coursework or in addition to it.
“Internships are a priority for us and we’re proud of the employer partnerships that have been created over the years,” said Career Center director Reesa Greenwald. “Employers look for students who have gone beyond their comfort zone to engage in a professional learning and working experience.”
The University is committed to providing internship opportunities for its students and helping students network with employers. To that end, in the 2013-2014 academic year, the Career Center provided access to more than 17,000 internship opportunities for students and coordinated close to 500 visits by employers to campus.
International Business Times named Seton Hall as one of the top five universities in the nation for undergraduate internships along with University of Pennsylvania and Duke University. Internships and other career-based learning experiences add focus to students’ post-graduation job searches and help them land their first jobs.
“I was able to experience different aspects of the sports industry, from marketing and sales to game day operations, and it made me realize what I wanted to do in sports. Each new internship experience was a stepping stone to something better,” said Anne Chavez ’14, who graduated with a degree in sports management and had internships with the New Jersey Devils as well as the sports marketing firm Positive Impact Partners and the sport facility management company S.A.F.E. Management.
Highlights from the Six-Month Follow-up Survey include:
- 86 percent of the respondents were working in a career-related field six months after graduation
- 81 percent had at least one internship or other experiential education semester while at Seton Hall
- 94 percent of those who applied to graduate school were enrolled in a graduate program
- The overall success rate for recent graduates is 88 percent, which reflects all those looking for employment in the field of their choice and those who pursued graduate studies.
- Of those reporting their starting salaries, the average was $43,349, with finance majors reporting the highest average starting salary, $52,770
- 2014 Seton Hall graduates are employed at a variety of top U.S. companies and organizations, including Verizon, Ernst & Young, Prudential, Robert Wood Johnson Health System, Goldman Sachs and the FBI.
