“I was very moved,” Principal Jerrill Adams told the students of Maplewood Middle School as they gathered outside the building at the completion of the 16th Annual Michelle Turner Martin Luther King Jr. Silent Peace March.
The march took the students from the school and through Maplewood Village, where they marched up and down Maplewood Avenue — always in stunning silence — before returning to the school to recite the Pledge of Allegiance and then return to their classrooms to watch Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s iconic “I Have a Dream” speech.
Adams complimented the students on the signs they had crafted, which were emblazoned with quotes from Dr. King as well as original calls for equality and peace, and asked them to take Dr. King’s message beyond this day and into their daily lives.
