Labor Day 2014

Labor Day 2014

Although Labor Day was signed into law in 1894 by Pres. Grover Cleveland to celebrate the American worker, these days it is largely a weekend for family and friends to get together to mark (and sometimes mourn) the end of summer, and the start of the new school year.

Here in SOMA, many groups spent this holiday weekend with barbecues, picnics and house parties. It was one last chance for the kids to run free and play before they head back to the classroom.

One group of kids and their parents enjoyed ribs, hot dogs and potato salad in a Maplewood backyard this weekend. The parents have been friends since their children — the youngest one now in preschool and the oldest headed off to high school — were babies.

Amid the general merriment, the parents managed to wrangle the young ‘uns together for one last photo to mark the summer of 2014, and to capture a moment of childhood.

Happy Labor Day, Maplewood, South Orange and Millburn from The Village Green. It’s been a great summer, and we are looking forward to a terrific year.
