On September 7, Gallery 1978 will remember local artist and board member Phyllis Carlin with a show of her art and a presentation of the highlights of her career.
Carlin’s work spans multiple media and styles.
In announcing the exhibit, the Gallery 1978 newsletter remembered Carlin, who passed away on April 6: “Phyllis was an inspiration as well as an enthusiastic Board member” with a “lifelong passion of making art.”
According to her obituary in The New York Times, Carlin was born in Newark in 1929 to Gertrude and Walter Goldberg. She became one of the first women admitted to the union of United Scenic Artists and painted sets for “a variety of important productions” in New York ranging from the Metropolitan Opera to the Ed Sullivan show.
The opening and commemoration takes place Sunday, Sept. 7 from 2-5 pm. Refreshments will include Carlin’s favorite: hot dogs.

Actress Emily Zacharias will read some of Carlin’s favorite poems at 2:30 p.m.
The exhibition will be open Saturday and Sunday, September 6 and 7, from 2-5 p.m. or by appointment through Sept 11. Call 862-438-8191.
Carlin’s family has asked that all proceeds from the sale of work go to 1978 Maplewood Arts Center.
