Newark Police arrested a Maplewood man on Saturday for crashing his car through the door of a Newark business while driving drunk, according to a press release.

Police responding at around 9:40 p.m. found that Hakeem O. Gayle, 22, had driven his Chevrolet Impala through the doorway of the business, said Newark Public Safety Director Anthony F. Ambrose. When the business owner used his cell phone to photograph the scene, Gayle allegedly took the phone and ran away, said Ambrose.

Gayle’s car was reportedly in a hit-and-run accident nearby just before the crash into the storefront, Ambrose said.

Police arrested Gayle and charged him with Theft, Driving While Intoxicated, Possession of CDS, Criminal Mischief and Contempt. His passenger, Juan S. Fonrose, 20, of East Orange, was also arrested for Driving While Intoxicated and Contempt.
