Maplewood and South Orange cinephiles are enjoying an embarrassment of riches this spring.
Besides the new Reel Talk series for cutting-edge independent film which debuted at SOPAC earlier this month, La Cinémathèque Film Club, which features classic films by renowned foreign filmmakers, is returning for another round of world-class foreign films in the SOPAC Loft — this time centered around the theme of Japanese film.
The series starts on March 22 with a screening of Ikuru by Akira Kurosawa. Screenings and discussions take place from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.
La Cinémathèque Film Club events are led by educator, artist, and filmmaker Gerard Amsellem who provides introductions and commentary in addition to leading post-screening discussions. Amsellem is a painter and filmmaker who currently teaches World Film at Livingston High School and has directed several short films.
Those interested in attending can become a Film Club Member. Memberships are based on the series and are available for sale in advance of the series and through the second film screening of the series as the discussions around each film build upon prior events.
