A storm is forecast to impact the area and a Flood Watch is in effect from Sunday afternoon through Monday afternoon. The Maplewood Department of Public Works is prepared to address emergency drainage problems.
Strong winds have the potential to down tress and powerlines; power outages are possible. Unsecured objects and scattered tree limbs may be moved by gusts of wind. Residents and business owners are advised to secure outdoor objects, including any holiday decorations. Travel should be avoided whenever possible and caution should be used when on the roads. In the event of downed power lines or trees, residents should contact both their local energy provider and the Maplewood Police Department non-emergency line.

Downed wires should always be considered “live,” and residents should remain at least 30 feet away. Note that electric current passes easily through water and standing water can hide downed wires.
To prevent carbon monoxide poisoning, residents are advised to not run any gasoline-powered generators in a garage or any other enclosed space.
Residents who rely on power for medical equipment should notify their local energy provider as well as the South Essex Fire Department non-emergency line prior to the storm.

Rainfall totals of 2 to 4 inches with locally higher amounts are forecast across the watch area Sunday into Monday. The heaviest rainfall is expected to fall overnight on Sunday and into early Monday morning. The combination of heavy rainfall and the already saturated grounds due to heavier rain over the last week could result in streams across the area experiencing rapid increases and flooding along low-lying and flood-prone locations.

PSE&G is prepared for the severe weather expected on Sunday that includes strong wind and heavy rain through the day on Monday. Wind gusts could reach hazard levels. Unsecured holiday decorations pose a risk during storms, as strong winds can turn outdoor holiday decorations into projectiles, endangering people, property and even your power.
In advance of the storm, PSE&G crews are performing system and logistics checks to ensure the availability of critical materials, fuel and other supplies to fulfill our commitment to bring customers safe and reliable service regardless of extreme weather conditions.
Loose decorations entangled with power lines may lead to outages, emphasizing the importance of securing festive displays to ensure both safety and uninterrupted power supply during inclement weather.
Customer safety:
- Downed wires should always be considered “live.” Stay at least 30 feet away from downed lines, and don’t go near the pole or anything touching the line. Immediately contact PSE&G, at 1-800-436-PSEG (7734),via our mobile app or our website, to report downed wires and dial 911if an immediate hazard exists.
- Electric current passes easily through water, so stay away from downed power lines and electrical wires. Don’t drive over – and don’t stand near – downed power lines.
- Downed lines can potentially be hidden in standing water. If you encounter large pools of standing water, stop, back up and choose another path.
